Aim:

To ensure the girl children have a bright future by facilitating their education and marriage expenses

Features:

  • Rs.250 (initially it was Rs.1000) and Rs. 1.5 lakhs are the minimum and average amount that can be deposited in a year.
  • The account will be valid for 21 years from the opening date, after which it will expire and the money will be credited to the girl child on whose behalf the account was opened.
  • The account would also immediately close if the girl child marries before the 21-year term is finished.
  • Deposits are likely up to 14 years from the account opening date.
  • Premature withdrawal can only be effected by the girl child in whose name the account was opened after she reaches the age of 18. This deduction will also be limited to 50 per cent of the balance at the end of the previous financial year and will only be allowed for higher education purposes or if the girl plans to get married.
  • A parent or guardian may only open one account per baby child.
  • Pursuant to section 80C of the Income Tax Act, the contributions made to the account, and even the proceeds and maturity number, will be entirely excluded from tax.
